Renting car and tyres: few rules to follow

car-rental-tyresIt often happens that you contact a car rental company, providing the desired car for a few hours or for long vacations. Very often, however, the choice of car is based only on price considered more or less suitable.

How many times, however, when you are renting a car, you get informations about the maintenance and checks carried out on summer tires?

The verification of the use of tyres, pressure, balance of wheels, together with the use of the tires for the season, they are important to improved safety of the driver and of others.

Car rental tyres: what to consider

However, by random checks by the traffic corps, it emerges as many drivers are still using in April and May snow tyres, with increased consumption and use of tires on other conditions than those for which they were designed for.

Added to this, there are are the considerations relating to safety: it is very important to control the degree of tread,  which if it is dropped below 1.6 mm in thickness it becomes very dangerous.

Usually car rental companies and the long-term hire shall generally changing tires when the tread is around 3 mm, to avoid the risks for their clients that occurs below this threshold (the tire change service is generally one of those included in the rental fee).

Car hire companies also make all checks on summer tires, taking all recommended maintenance practices by car  and tyres producers (for example, the reversal of the tyres between the rear and front axle, to ensure a degree of uniform wear).

When you take a rented car is useful also control when was made  the last check of the tyres pressure, remembering that  is recommended a checking at least every 3 weeks.

The right pressure not only increases the safety of car (rental or not) but also results a better road holding and a suitable fuel consumption, which at the end helps to saving money!

Some car rental companies offer various possibilities, including replacement at a predetermined mileage or the verification of the level of wear.

Infact the tyres change service is included in the long- term car rental fee, and  it is usually programmed with a distance not exceeding a mileage of 40,000 km away.

The fluctuations due to the climate or the use of the car put a strain on the tyres, and the pressure between the 4 tyres can easily become unbalanced.  An optimal pressure ensures best adherence of the car, which gives a safe driving and a lower fuel consumption for each travelled km.

About snow tyres, for  many car rental companies, they are not included in the rental price and both must be booked and charged as extra. Would be better book all the extras at least one week before to rental, to be sure to receive them on the scheduled dates and  the payment of winter yires or snow chains must take place on site.

Winter tires and snow chains are extra to book with the car hire. Most suppliers have provisions to this kind of extras. Sometimes, however, the increase in requests for these extras could limit the availability of the same. Snow tyres or chains must be paid on the place, directly to the agency of rental cars.

When one needs to take a rental car for business or pleasure, often one can only consider the price and type of vehicle suited of personal needs. Maintenance and tyres checks are certainly not uppermost in our thoughts, but it would be important to take more attention of this particular: the type of tyre fitted, the checks on its use state, the pressure of the tyres and the balance are all fundamental aspects, as they ensure maximum safety to the driver, passengers and pedestrians.

A control that seems obvious is to test the types of tyres (summer or winter): the statistics obtained from data provided by the traffic corps show that is a subject far from obvious, since many drivers use winter tyres even at the gates of summer, with repercussions on the safety and efficiency of car.

High temperatures affect the performance of winter tyres  that are not designed for the summer season. The compound of winter tyres is designed for low temperatures and the strongly stacked tread design is subject to accentuated deformations that generate a drop of the general safety performance such as road holding and braking, as well as a greater wear of the tread, leading in turn to a shorter duration of the tire in terms of kilometers.

However, there are the so-called four-season tyres (all season): suit any time of year and  are perfect for those who live where winters are not too rigid.

There are certainly benefits to those who drive in mountains or in country towns. These drivers are meeting in summer also wet mud and dirties streets.
